Sapona Plastics is donating the historic Luck's cannery facility to the Town of Seagrove for a community center. CEO Jack Lail is helping raise $450K to fix up the building. See the website for more information at luckscannery.weebly.com.
The center will benefit the thriving hand-made pottery tradition in Seagrove, NC providing a multi-use space for locals and tourists that visit over 80 area potteries. Sapona Plastics has hosted an annual celebration of Seagrove Potters in its warehouse facility at the site for several years. Due to growth and new jobs Lail has decided to provide a separate 90,000 Sq.Ft. facility so the potters will have a permanent venue for sharing their art that will also serve as an entrepreneurial incubator for businesses and space for other community purposes including a town hall and police department. The unique building dates back as far as 1947 and the Seagrove pottery tradition dates back over 100 years. Pintos, pottery and plastics have been a part of Seagrove for many years. This is an opportunity to support cultural arts, community development, economic growth and historic preservation. Jack Lail originally got involved in plastics in the 60's with GE and in the early 70's when he formed Mid-State Plastics. That business led to additional joint ventures with 3 other plastics companies before being sold in 1994. Sapona Plastics is another joint venture formed in 2004. Lail's partner in Sapona Plastics is Sapona Manufacturing, a textile company based in nearby Cedar Falls, NC founded in 1836.
