The following presentation was made on 4/16/18 at the Historic Luck's Bean Cannery by Dean Lail:
The hard work and entrepreneurial spirit of our forefathers has had a positive impact on our local community. We are here today to recognize those efforts and those of this generation as well. It may or may not be well known that there was once a fellow here in Seagrove that served on the board of education and as a county commissioner. He was in the National Guard, the Lion’s Club and was active with his wife at Seagrove Church of Christ. On top of that, the local football stadium is named after his wife’s father. Together they raised two daughters. That’s quite a story and he worked here in this plant. We would like to recognize my father, Jack Lail for donating this facility. Many of you may know that he has volunteered a wealth of effort and guidance in the past year to make it an invaluable asset that the town and community will appreciate for many years. Jack is also one of those forefathers we respect. He was founder of Mid-State Plastics in the 70’s. He was named Randolph County citizen of the year and NC Small Businessman of the year in the 80’s. He was a member of Rotary and served on the Randolph Hospital board, the board of RCC and Wingate College and was active at Seagrove First Baptist. These are men that we respect and honor today. But that’s not the entire story. There is a long list of people and companies that have helped bring us to this point today and for the sake of time I will refer you to our website for that long list, but I would like to especially thank all our financial donors to date including:
In recognition of their families’ many years of involvement and support of Luck’s Inc. in Seagrove, and their families’ generous donation pledge to the Historic Luck’s Beans Cannery project, the Town of Seagrove, along with the many former workers of Luck’s and the citizens of the surrounding community we would like to honor the late D. Clinton Comer, his wife Martha Comer and her father the late Ivy Luck, along with Jack C. Lail for his vision and hard work to donate this property to the community, by naming the entire Historic Luck’s Beans Cannery site Luck Comer Lail Center. The advisory committee submits to the Town of Seagrove that Luck Comer Lail Center will be featured prominently on the sign out front as well as on the front and back of the building exterior. Luck’s was originally founded by Ivy Luck along with Alfred Spencer and Clay Presnell as the Mountain View Canning Company. It quickly found success when the name was changed to Luck’s. They started out providing a service to the community, and this facility today is doing that again with the name Luck Comer Lail Center. There’s more to this story though… Elizabeth Comer Dozier and Joan Comer Johnston have generously pledged together today an additional significant donation in honor of their mother, Martha Luck Comer. She is a long-time supporter of many causes including the Seagrove Pottery Center, Seagrove Library, YMCA, RCC foundation and her alma mater High Point University, where she received her teaching degree. She taught school at Westmore and has for many years been a homemaker and a member of the Seagrove Christian Church. Ms. Comer was appointed by Gov. James Holshouser Jr. to replace her father on the board of RCC. She also served the remainder of her husband’s term with the Randolph County Commissioners. My parents describe her as a kind and generous friend, outgoing like her father and a wealth of knowledge. And now you know the rest of the story. In recognition of her many years of support of Luck’s Inc. in Seagrove and the surrounding community, her immediate family would like to honor Martha Luck Comer with an additional significant pledge to the Historic Luck’s Beans Cannery project hereby submitting to the Town of Seagrove to name this part of the facility the Martha Luck Comer Community Center and that a sign with this name be prominently displayed above the outside entrance.
