Historic Lucks Cannery
Annual Report 2022-2023
We welcomed the Seagrove Area Potters to the first event since the pandemic. Attendance was very strong and potters that participated experienced strong sales and connected with many folks. Feedback from participants indicated that there was not enough space and the show was not as big as before. Unofficial attendance was estimated at around 3000 visitors and 20 potteries. .
The 36th NC Potter’s Conference was held with great success in March. The theme was Evolution of a Craft and featured presentations by potters from across the country and North Carolina.
Phase II is underway: The town received $1.8 Million in grants from the NC Legislature and Randolph County. This grant is allowing initiation of renovation of the upper-level lobby area to accommodate larger shows and events. We have also been able to complete Fernandez Loop street construction and new parking for 60 vehicles, along with replacing the roof over Hall B and Carolina Bronze.
The Jandy Ammons Foundation made a $25,000 donation to enhance the entrance to the upper level. Lauren Freeman and Aylissa Hall were selected as artists for murals.
Several large dinner events were held. The 90th birthday of Jack C. Lail included tours of the entire facility including Sapona Plastics and Carolina Bronze, along with live music followed by a dinner for 200 friends, relatives and dignitaries. Keynote guest speakers were Rhett Brown, president of Wingate College and Dr. Shackleford, retired president of Randolph Community College. Senator Dave Craven presented a Happy Birthday certificate from the the NC Senate.
The Randolph Partnership for Children held a fund raiser dinner/auction with 250 people and raised around $45,000. Live music by the Tyler Millard band inside and on the patio was a treat for the guests. Dr. Jonathan Thill of Venture Asheboro was the emcee.
Sapona Plastics and Randolph Electric held Christmas parties with over 150 each and The Seagrove Parade hosted Santa after the parade with prizes for children.
In all, events were attended in the last 12 months by nearly 7000 people. Attendees and organizers were local/statewide/national and reflected significant age/ethnic diversity. Income to the Town for events totaled nearly $20,000.
The featured summer concert was the Randolph Jazz Band. Emcee for the night was Miss Randolph County Tori Gross and special vocalist was Ashley Hutton. The Girl Scouts presented their idea for the pollinator garden and sold snacks.
Carolina Bronze has progressed with their CB East studio and expanded use of the facility. Melissa and Ed Walker and their team have created an impressive manufacturing studio of art and sculpture. Their investment exceeds $150,000 in renovations to their space. They have leased additional space in the facility and created Walker Art Studios to provide space for artists.
Eastern Steel Works has progressed with the addition of 3 workers and will employ up to 9. Deliveries and shipments of steel and fabrications are in and out regularly.
Businesses at the cannery also participated in the Juvenile Day Reporting Center Teen Restitution program with several at-risk and court involved youth volunteering time for renovation, cleaning and service work.
Girl Scout troop 30006 meets at the cannery regularly and initiated a project to create a pollinator garden in the courtyard. They also volunteered at the summer concert.
The center is maintaining storage of historical items of Seagrove and created two public historical display areas. Good news has come that the train depot has received donations for renovations in the future.
Grace Fellowship has temporarily rented space for weekly meetings with pastor Walter Scheu.

Historic Lucks Cannery
Annual Report 2021-2022
We have lived up to our mission of supporting arts, entertainment, economic development, education and cultural development. Thanks to our many volunteers we have enriched the lives of a good number of people in the community and area. We would like to thank everyone.
This year was exciting with the official grand opening of phase 1a held on 11/8/21. Former Luck’s Inc. employees toured the facility and recalled the hey days of the bean plant. Attendance was over 200 and featured words by many of our volunteers and key people including Joan Johnston, Darius Luck, and Jack Lail. Carey Durham highlighted the Artwalk and introduced Elizabeth Lail as the keynote speaker. On display as table centerpieces at dinner were selected pieces of John Ehle’s Ben Owen Sr. pottery collection and a Luck’s beans auction pot was donated by Sid Luck. The lower-level renovation phase 1a turned out to be an excellent use of the funds available. Renovation expenses to date total just over $800,000.
In the first year since opening, the complex has hosted a total of 20 events attended by an estimated 4300 people.
Grand Openings: 3 Art shows: 3. Christmas parties: 3 Conferences: 2. Trade shows: 2 Weddings: 1
Reunions, Showers, Birthdays: 3 Scouts: 1/week. Concerts: 1 Meetings: 20+
Attendees and organizers were local/statewide/national and reflected significant age/ethnic diversity.
The events employed 4 musical groups including the featured concert by The King’s Brass, as well as jazz, rock and bluegrass entertainment. The King’s Brass concert included a master class for top local high school brass players.
The NC Pottery Center hosted their 35th NC Potters Conference at the facility in Seagrove. This was an intensive 3-day event with three simultaneous master potters focused this year on Korean influences in pottery. The Seagrove Area Potters routinely use the space for meetings.
Carolina Bronze has progressed with their CB East studio and expanded use of the facility. Melissa and Ed Walker and their team have created an impressive manufacturing studio of art and sculpture. Their investment exceeds $150,000 in renovations to their space. Additions to their space included an outdoor loading dock and ramp to the old boiler house. Plans are to replace the roof over their space this coming year.
Eastern Steel Works expanded as well, occupying the Lucks maintenance shop building on the site. Lydia and John Stratton plan to purchase that space from the water district and operate a steel component fabrication business making welded pieces for horizontal structures such as roadway bridges and revitalization of aging infrastructure from this central location along the East coast.
Sapona Plastics also expanded with the addition of 2 injection molding machines, moving to 7-day operations, 12 hours per day with some lights-out molding overnight. Kay and Dean, along with daughter Kathryn lead the growing plastics business while volunteering many hours to the renovation project and activities. This $800,000 investment in equipment adds significantly to the local and county tax base.
Two of the six private companies operating on site are minority owned and one is woman owned. On site are two local owner/operator trucking companies renting parking space. Sapona Plastics has also created at 362 Fernandez Loop, a minority owned joint venture called Smart Technology Plastics, headed by Christopher Jackson. Chris has been instrumental in bringing in students/grads from A&T University to work in Seagrove.
Grace Given, operated by Kenetta Mathews-White, began storing food, clothes and supplies at the cannery for homeless and less fortunate. Eastern Steel provides much needed space for storage and sorting.
Businesses at the cannery also participated in the Juvenile Day Reporting Center Teen Restitution program with several at-risk and court involved youth volunteering time for renovation and service work.
The center installed a central mailbox station for tenants. The center also purchased 100 chairs and 13 tables for event rental use.
The front entrance, landscaping and lighting was donated by Winn and Elizabeth Dozier and Ran and Joan Johnston just in time for the grand opening. Uwharrie Builders was the contractor that jumped through hoops to get it done.
8 new YouTube video stories were added to the website that feature interviews and talks by various volunteers and attendees. Be sure to check it out here on the stories page.
The center is also maintaining storage of historical items of Seagrove.
Plans for the coming year include completing the parking and Fernandez loop, replacing the roofs over Hall B and CB East and renovating the upper level. We have received funds from the NC Legislature, and Randolph County for these purposes.

Annual Report September 2021
We are finally complete with the lower-level renovation enough for it to serve pent-up demand for gatherings and events. This past year we continued to face the devastation of the COVID-19 virus and that held up a lot of our progress but that was okay because a place for gatherings was not useable during the pandemic anyway. The local potters are still a little reluctant and have decided not to hold the annual Celebration of Seagrove Potters this year.
Our first event is the Randolph County Elected Officials dinner on October 5th with over 100 attendees expected for a catered meal with special recognitions planned by the Town of Seagrove. This event is sponsored by the Asheboro/Randolph Chamber of Commerce and Randolph Electric. Mayor Fernandez is personally making pottery mugs for all attendees and most of the potters in town are donating very nice door prizes. We think Seagrove will shine at this event and the Historic Lucks Cannery will gain recognition as a premier community event center.
An even bigger event will be the Six Shooters Gun Show November 6-7. This show was hosted in the Sapona Plastics warehouse in 2020 and was a huge success. Randolph County ranks 29th in the nation for residents that keep firearms (City-Date.com.) We expect over 2000 attendees for the weekend and this one show will likely generate rental income 3 to 4 times per year.
The following weekend, Saturday, November 13th, former workers and family of Lucks, Inc. will gather for a reunion from 2 to 5 PM. It has been 19 years since the plant closed. We would like to combine this evening with a meal and invite our donors to join at 5PM for a grand opening dinner to show our appreciation for those workers and donors. This will also be a fund raiser event.
Speaking of funds, there is a lot of federal money that may be coming our way through Randolph County Government. First, we believe Seagrove has been allocated approximately $70,000 based on population. Secondly, we requested $500,000 American Recovery Act funds for infrastructure and economic recovery. Several other infrastructure projects including wastewater projects and the train depot museum are in the works for Seagrove. Finally, our representatives at the state government are considering up to $1.7 Million to help Seagrove complete the Phase 2 renovation of the Historic Lucks Cannery. We will still need to continue to raise funds locally from private individuals as we all know costs continue to rise.
This past year has been a slow process to manage the renovation project with the funds we had available. I think we have done an exceptional job at getting value for the money available whether it was for roofing, floor finishing, restroom or electrical work. Our last few items came down to the wire including the HVAC and an additional landing on the front entrance requested by the Fire Marshall.
We are thankful for significant donations this past year by JBDJ, LLC, Elizabeth Dozier and Dean & Kay Lail. In addition, we have had loans of artwork, donations of artwork, and many hours of volunteer service. We also welcomed to our board Larry Hancock. Larry lives in Raleigh but has close connections with Seagrove. Larry also has non-profit experience and public experience having worked for the Cooperative Extension.
In the coming year we hope to host art exhibits, live music, trade shows, meetings, blood drives, a 5K run and weddings. Yes, we already have a wedding scheduled for October 2022!
Financially, we have spent all the money we have raised and had to have additional last-minute donations to make the final occupancy. In the most recent fiscal year we raised $3717 on Facebook from 31 donors. Most donations are made directly to the Town of Seagrove and still can be treated as tax deductible.
Thank you to all that have donated.
